This was quite a challenging part of the course with many exercises and the need to complete and submit a good assignment making sure I choose the right subject material and achieved the four different types of lighting effect within eight images.
I am pleased with my tutor's overall comments -
Well done on completing this assignment. I think you have produced a strong and proficient set of images which are well tied together and demonstrate a clear grasp of lighting from a technical stance.
To increase your overall outcome try to consider the meaning behind the works. What is it you want to show or say through your pictures?
It is difficult for me to introduce a message or meaning into the photographs of three different kitchen utensils, although my tutor says, "Great choice of object! They become little personalities in the different lights you used and it would have been good to hear more of your commentary speak about this as well as the technical information."
My tutor is pleased with my technical skills -
"Technically I think you are excelled in this assignment. Each frame is very well exposed and thoughtfully composed. In the below photo I wonder if you could have cropped the vase completely so as to defamiliarise the objects from their context. The result is quite pulling I thought; menacing!!
There are suggestions about my creativity however -
"When you reflect upon your creativity I feel you are missing something. You are still concentrating your reflection on your technical decisions. Whilst it is true that technical decisions may indeed be creative in and of themselves the creativity is about the impact of those decisions. Why were they made? What were they hoping to achieve? This is why I asked you to consider Hitchcock’s use of lighting in his films as they are a byproduct (executed extremely well of course) to the idea behind them. "
For my final assignment my tutor gives me the following advice -
"Try to think metaphorically about your subjects. What do they signify to you? What might they mean to others? How can you use your technical knowledge to bring out their significance / purpose / story?
You could even continue the themes you have been looking at about your personal relationship to your home to carry on with some of the research. A very effective narrative could be formed here for ass. 5 if you are interested in pursuing that."
I am ready to submit my final assignment. I will be bringing out a story in a magazine illustrative reportage style as the assignment brief requires. As for incorporating some personal relationship issues into my work, I am more interested in capturing other peoples stories rather than documenting my own.
